Getting Started with SpyScope
A complete guide to setting up your iPhone or iPad as a live streaming camera for baby monitoring, security, pet watching, and more.
Step 1: Install SpyScope
Download SpyScope from the App Store on your iPhone or iPad. The app requires iOS 17.0 or later.
When you first launch the app, you'll be asked to grant camera and local network permissions. These are required for streaming to work.
Step 2: Grant Permissions
SpyScope needs two permissions to work:
- Camera Access - To capture video from your device's camera
- Local Network Access - To serve the video stream to other devices on your network
If you accidentally denied a permission, you can enable it in Settings → SpyScope.
Step 3: Connect to WiFi
Make sure your iPhone/iPad is connected to the same WiFi network as the device you want to view the stream on. SpyScope streams over your local network only - your video never leaves your home.
Tip: For best results, use a 5GHz WiFi network. This provides more bandwidth and lower latency for smooth streaming.
Step 4: Start Recording
Tap the record button to start streaming. You'll see:
- A live preview of what the camera sees
- The stream URL (e.g.,
http://192.168.1.100:8080) - Recording time and status indicators
Step 5: View on Another Device
Open the stream URL in any web browser on your computer, tablet, or phone. You can view it on:
- Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge on Mac or PC
- Safari on iPhone or iPad
- Any device with a web browser on your network
- VLC, IINA, or other media players (open the stream URL directly)
The browser page shows a live video player with your camera feed. No app installation needed on viewing devices.
Optional: Adjust Settings
Tap the gear icon to customize your stream:
- Video Quality - Choose from 720p, 1080p, or 2K resolution
- Camera - Select Wide, Ultra Wide, or Telephoto lens
- Latency - Lower latency for real-time monitoring, higher for smoother playback
- Torch - Enable the flashlight for low-light situations
Tips for Best Results
- Keep the device plugged in for extended monitoring sessions
- Position the device on a stable surface or use a phone mount
- Ensure good lighting or enable the torch feature
- Use the orientation lock for consistent framing
- Bookmark the stream URL for quick access
